Bloubergstrand
About Bloubergstrand Blinds and what it does on this coast
Bloubergstrand Blinds makes and fits window shading to measure along this stretch of the West Coast. Roller blinds, roller shutters, zip screens and the motorisation that drives them are built to the sizes taken off your own openings, because a 1970s cottage window and a new glass box on the beachfront are never the same size and rarely the same problem.
Specified for the wind before anything else
Bloubergstrand looks south across Table Bay to Table Mountain, the opposite of the usual South African window brief: here the money wall faces south, so the glazing that needs the most careful specification is driven by glare and wind loading rather than north-sun heat gain. The south-easter blows through with no headland or high ground to break it, consistently from October through March, and winter swaps it for north-westerly storm gusts from the opposite direction. Behind the built-up strip sits the Blaauwberg dune belt, so the wind carries fine sand as well as salt across decks, tracks and motor housings.
The collection runs to twelve ways of answering that: sunscreen, blockout and double rollers, day/night blinds, aluminium venetians, cellular honeycomb, vertical and panel blinds, concealed ceiling-recess blinds, shaped and skylight blinds, external venetians, roller shutters, zip screens and motorisation. The external range is the premium tier because it holds sun, glare and sand on the outside of the glass. Anything mounted outside gets marine-grade powder-coated aluminium, sealed cassettes rather than open tracks, and wind-sensor motorisation as standard; indoors, chain and cord tensioners are fitted every time.
Bloubergstrand and the rest of this stretch of coast
Bloubergstrand itself runs two building eras side by side: 1970s beach cottages with punched windows along Stadler Road and Small Bay, and new glass boxes chasing the mountain view, each measured and mounted differently. Big Bay is the newer, more built-up reach of the same beach system, with apartment blocks and glass-fronted houses around Eden on the Bay, full-height sliding doors aimed at the kite launch, and body corporate sign-off on anything exterior. Sunset Beach, immediately south, is mostly freestanding beachfront houses oriented to the evening light, a west-facing brief where sunscreen rollers and external venetians do most of the work.
Melkbosstrand, further north, reads as a village rather than a strip, with generous plots and briefs that are more often a garden-facing lounge or a street-facing bedroom than a single view wall, though the wind and salt argument carries over in full. Sunningdale sits inland near Table View, newer double-storey family homes with consistent aluminium window schedules, blockout bedrooms, day/night living areas and child-safe operation front of mind, set back from the dunes but still within reach of the same south-easter.
How a job runs
You enquire through the form or the chat on this site, telling us the rooms, the products you are considering and which street or complex you are in; it takes about two minutes. One of our expert consultants will contact you shortly to set up a free in-home measure. On that visit each opening is measured in place at three points, its exposure to the south-easter and the dune sand is read off the site itself, the true bearing of each room is taken, and fabric, openness and control are settled room by room with physical samples rather than a screen swatch.
A written quote follows, itemised window by window, with the lead time stated before you decide, so what you pay matches what you were shown. Where a building has scheme rules, the body corporate paperwork is arranged in advance. Once you approve the quote, every piece is built to those sizes and hung by our own fitting team, who set it up and demonstrate it before they go, wind sensor and remote included.
What we will not promise
Nothing on this coastline is maintenance-free, and anyone who says a product here needs nothing is selling rather than specifying; we say plainly that even sealed, marine-grade hardware wants an occasional fresh-water rinse. Roller shutters on this site are a shading product for sun, glare, sand and privacy and are not security-rated; if a security-rated product is what you need, ask and we will point you to the right conversation. No exterior figure is firm until someone has stood at the wall with a tape, because build-up, exposure and the fixing detail each shift it.
A wind sensor matters more than the number on a datasheet, so we would rather quote a roller shutter or a channelled zip screen on an exposed stand than an awning that spends the summer being wound in. A sunscreen gives daytime privacy only. And anything to do with planning permission or scheme rules is decided by your trustees and the City, not by us; our job is to check it before quoting.
Getting in touch
The on-page form and the chat widget on any page are the two routes in, and either one starts the same process: a consultant calls you directly, with no call centre in between, to arrange the free in-home measure. Your details serve that call-back and nothing else, are never shared or sold, and POPIA governs how they are kept. If you would like the thinking first, the free guide on this site works through where the sun goes over Table Bay and what belongs on each wall.
