Charcoal roller blinds partly lowered in a beachfront Bloubergstrand lounge with sliding glass doors framing Table Mountain and kitesurfers on the bay

Made-to-measure · Bloubergstrand, Cape Town

The view every postcard steals. We plan for the wind that comes free with it.

Made-to-measure blinds, roller shutters and wind-rated outdoor screens for Bloubergstrand's beachfront homes — measured on site, fitted by our own team, specified for the south-easter before it specifies itself.

The collection

Every window answers to the same wind.

Bloubergstrand runs two building eras side by side — 1970s beach cottages with punched windows along Stadler Road and Small Bay, and new glass boxes chasing the Table Mountain view around Big Bay. Twelve ways to spec it, made to measure for the opening in front of you, and rated for the Cape Doctor before anything else.

Built for this stretch of coast

Every window on this beach answers to the same wind

A mountain-facing lounge needs the view without the glare bouncing off open water. A street-facing bedroom needs proper dark, whatever the beach path below is doing. A patio needs shade that survives a south-easter without flapping loose or filling with sand off the dunes. One consultant, one visit, a written answer for each window.

The hardware is chosen for the dune belt, not just the room

Powder-coated, marine-grade aluminium on anything mounted outside, sealed cassettes rather than open tracks that catch wind-blown sand off the Blaauwberg dunes, chain and cord tensioners fitted as standard, and wind-sensor motorisation wherever a product sits outside the glass. Even the best hardware wants an occasional fresh-water rinse this close to the water — we say so rather than call anything maintenance-free.

Why Bloubergstrand is specified differently

A postcard view, and nothing to break the wind that comes with it

Bloubergstrand looks south across Table Bay to Table Mountain — the single most-photographed vantage point of the mountain anywhere, and the opposite of the usual South African window brief. Here the money wall faces south, not north, so the glazing that needs the most careful spec is driven by glare and wind loading, not the north-sun heat gain most local homes are designed around.

The Cape south-easter — the "Cape Doctor" — blows through with almost nothing to break it: no headland, no high ground between the beach and open water. Consistent 15–25 knot conditions from October through March make this one of the most reliable kitesurf venues on earth; winter swaps it for north-westerly storm gusts from the opposite direction. Behind the built-up strip sits the Blaauwberg Conservation Area's dune belt, which means the wind carries more than salt — a south-easter lifts fine sand off the dunes and drives it across decks, tracks and motor housings, a maintenance point we'd rather flag honestly than gloss over.

  • View walls face south/south-west across open water — glare and wind drive the spec, not north-sun heat gain
  • 15–25 knot south-easter, October to March, plus winter north-westerly storm gusts — nothing here is sheltered
  • Blaauwberg dune belt means wind-blown sand reaches tracks and motors, not just salt spray
  • Two building eras side by side — 1970s cottage retrofits and new glass-box builds — measured differently
How we specify for Bloubergstrand
01

Orientation

View walls face south/south-west across open water — glare and wind load drive the brief more than north-sun heat gain.

02

Wind

Near-constant south-easter October–March plus winter north-westerly storms — every exterior product wind-rated, motorised systems spec'd with wind-sensor auto-retract as standard, not an upsell.

03

Sand

Proximity to the Blaauwberg dune belt means wind-blown grit reaches tracks and motor housings — sealed cassettes and honest maintenance advice.

04

Salt

Open Table Bay exposure — marine-grade powder-coated aluminium on anything mounted outside.

05

Building era

1970s cottage retrofit or contemporary glass-box new build — a different measuring and mounting approach for each, decided at the free in-home measure.

Questions

Before you enquire

Do you cover Big Bay, Sunset Beach, Melkbosstrand and Sunningdale as well as Bloubergstrand?

Yes — Bloubergstrand is our home ground, and we measure and fit across Big Bay, Sunset Beach, Melkbosstrand and Sunningdale too. If you're just outside those, ask on the enquiry form and we'll confirm.

Will wind actually damage an awning or zip screen here?

An unrated one, yes — the south-easter is strong and near-constant here, not an occasional gust. That's why we spec wind-rated fabric and hardware as the baseline and fit wind-sensor motors on anything exterior as standard, so the screen or awning retracts before a gust rather than after.

Does wind-blown sand actually get into the tracks?

Yes, honestly — the Blaauwberg dune belt behind the beachfront means fine sand travels on a windy day, and it will find an open track or motor housing over time. We use sealed cassettes on exterior products for exactly this reason, and we say plainly that even good hardware wants an occasional clean this close to the dunes.

What actually stops the glare off the water on a mountain-facing window?

In order of effect: exterior shading such as external venetians or a roller shutter (stops heat and glare at the glass), sunscreen or day-night blinds inside (cuts the load while keeping the view), and motorisation so it happens on schedule whether you're home or on the beach.

My house is one of the older cottages near Stadler Road — can you still fit made-to-measure blinds?

Yes — smaller, punched window openings in a 1970s-era cottage are a normal retrofit brief for us, not a special case. We measure the existing frame on site and spec accordingly, rather than assuming a new-build system fits.

Are your blinds safe for small children?

Every corded or chained blind is fitted with a tensioner as standard. For nurseries and children's rooms we generally recommend wand-tilt, cordless or motorised operation — ask your consultant and it's built into the quote.
