Why a plain roller works so well on this beach

A roller blind is a single flat fabric sheet on a tube — no folds, no bulk, nothing to catch the wind indoors. On the wide glass most Bloubergstrand lounges are built around, that simplicity is the whole point: sunscreen mesh in a 3-5% openness holds the Table Mountain view across the bay while cutting the glare that bounces straight off open water most afternoons here, harder than it does on a sheltered inland window.

Blockout, sunscreen, or both on one bracket

Bedrooms usually want blockout — full dark regardless of what the beach path outside is doing. A double roller pairs a sunscreen layer with a blockout layer on the same bracket, so the same window gives you the view during the day and complete privacy after dark, without swapping anything by hand unless you choose to.

Fitted for the wind, not just the window

Roller blinds live indoors, so they don't take the south-easter head-on the way an exterior product does — but a wide span on a glass box near Big Bay still needs proper engineering: a central join line or motorised linked blinds rather than one chain trying to control several metres of fabric. We spec that at the measure, not after the fabric's cut.

What a roller blind costs on this coast

Prices here are a guide per square metre, installed. A chain or spring roller — sunscreen, blockout or light-filtering — falls between R1,000 and R1,600 the square metre, a plain blockout sitting low in that band and a high-spec sunscreen or a double roller near the top of it. Put a motor in the tube and the same opening runs R2,500 to R3,800, the control and the commissioning included.

Under about a square metre we bill a minimum instead of an area: a bathroom window in one of the Stadler Road cottages still needs its own tube, its own brackets and its own trip up the coast. None of that is a quotation. Your own numbers arrive per opening after the free measure, in writing, and nothing is cut before you have read them.
